I am a certified hang glider pilot. It is a very dangerous activity. Broken collar bones are very common (impact with the control bar assembly during landing), broken ankles too.
You are strapped - sort of - into a ~70lb. apparatus traveling through the air at anywhere from about 15- 20 mph (stall speed) to 80 mph (assuming controlled flight).
Landing aprroach speed typically 10-15% faster than stall speed, and then you have to control the weight of the glider upon landing- often on uneven ground with rocks and other debris.
Even the best get injured over the course of their careers.
I am now retired from gliding. Never did end up in a hospital but I was just lucky (and very athletic during my gliding years).
