My wife (who's a PharmD) has been put into the CV19 Vaccination Czar role at her university. That involves keeping track of which faculty and staff fit the current requirements along with literally picking up the vials from the nearby hospital and guiding the PharmDs administering the shots.
She found out that on one day, the hospital itself wasted nine vaccinations because folks scheduled didn't show up. That is unacceptable.
Her approach is a more active one keeping close track of how many are left as the day progresses because folks just don't show up! And once you start processing the Pfizer flavor, a six hour countdown clock starts. She has a contact list and immediately starts calling or emailing next in line before end of day to ensure that it gets used - by someone. She wants to make sure every dose is put into someone's arm and has made command decisions in a couple of cases for those who don't yet fall into the priority group. Because they were available in time.
Or, just throw them away. Which is not a good alternative either.
