I know why

For the same reason we don't have great public transporation in this country, comparable to what so many other industrialized countries have:

Bribery (now called lobbying) of our elected officials for many decades, in order to limit investment in public transportation, in order to maintain sales and profits of cars.

Very simple answer, and very true. Force people to buy cars and then build them with "planned obsolecence"

Not complicated at all.
