I should...

...probably mention another interesting side of Russian life - super-wide-spread theft, especially of services.

Since their wages are so meager, plus due to old Soviet tradition of common habitual theft, it is everywhere.

Most music CD's sold in stores there are counterfeit. Ditto for videos.

You could buy a complete Microsoft suite for $3, same for the Photoshop. No one there buys official software. A guy I sometimes communicate with laughed at my old version - "We all have XX now!" Of course... for $3 why not?

There is huge network of bootlegged movies web sites - nobody pays for streaming, but instead they all watch first run movies way ahead of us for free.

Interesting, that that tradition remains alive among those, who settled here... the Russian slave mentality is hard to weed out. Even some of our friends, who came here 30 years ago, still do that. Much depends on where you live... if you live in one of the many Russian ghettos in the US, then "you do as the Russians do". They manage to use their neighbor's WiFi networks - since they often live in apartment buildings, there are many to choose from.

Fortunately, we live good distance from the ghetto, but even here there are people who are still living the "Russian Life". Our only connection to that cesspool is my wife taking her mother to a Russian store, maybe once in two months - an hour drive. They do sell some stuff not available at your Shop Right there.

BTW, speaking of Russians living abroad - my father lives in Canada, and he is 103, going to be 104 in a month. That man lived through the many upheavals, fought in the WW2 from the first day till the last, and today maintains crystal-clear mind and memory. His hearing is better, than mine - he has no difficulty speaking on a phone.

But the most interesting thing about him - he is always cheerful, he never complains, he is always positive. He lives independently, and he still walks to a store across a very busy road.

That is a different kind of a Russian... with not a hint of dishonesty ever.

So there ARE some decent Russians, to be sure...

End of my Monday morning rant. :)
