As it is in many countries.
Not that many years ago in the phillipines, a local oligarch family used their hired enforcers to intercept a caravan of people who were helping a competing candidate in a local election.
The caravan of about 15-20 cars consisted of the candidates wife and sister, dozens of supporters, and a dozen or so reporters. They were traveling together in a mutli car caravan (in hopes of safety) so that the candidates wife could file papers for her husband's candidacy at the district elections office.
You guessed it- the mercenaries blocked off the highway (trapping some completely uninvolved cars and occupants also) - and murdered them all, using a government backhoe to dig a ditch alongside the highway to push the bodies into.
Many of the women, including the candidates wife, and the candidates pregnant sister, were raped before they were murdered.
About 70-80 people altogether were murdered.
This is only one example of phillipines "campaign" activities...
