Don't blame the big retailers for giving consumers what they want.
Most people don't care about country of origin. They just want to buy as cheaply and conveniently as possible.
If you give somebody the choice of buying a product made in China for $XX, or a US-made alternative for 50% more, or even just 25% more, how many people will fork over the extra cash to help a US factory afloat? Damn few.
And for the people who are willing to pay the premium for something made here, how many are willing to put the effort into researching country of origin before buying? Some will do that for big ticket items and specialty products, but for most purchases they won't or can't take the time.
We got into this dependent relationship with China thanks to an accumulation of consumer decisions made over the last 20+ years.
