to look at specific vehicles in a company line. Mazda's Miata has made the top ten most reliable car for 10 years running and in one outfit last year number 1 - again.
But that does not mean their other vehicles rank highly.
Honda on one report I saw had the Odyssey Minivan ranked 9th least reliable vehicle of ANY car including the Germans and Americans - yikes. Scotty Kilmer loved Honda and he has been telling people to avoid that pile of crap for many years now. The thing is one car or one bad engine (in the CRV/Civic) can bring down the brand. I think Honda fell from second-most reliable to the middle of the pack around 15th. But the Civic and Fit and Ridgeline all do very well.
Perhaps they figure no one buys Minivans - I think there are only 4 makers left making them. Kia makes them and in South Korea, they make very high-end ones and limo versions. There is also one in China that runs over $120,000US because the wealthy there love them.
When I lived in Korea I noted that some of the Kia/Hyundai cars were amazing - they had one that was called the Genesys with full recline in the back and massaging seats and a fridge. I said to my friend "why isn't this sold in the west?" And he said they sell the junk to the west because "you'll buy anything." It was funny the way he said it and comes across mean in writing so you kinda had to be there. This occurred 10 minutes after we met people eating at Dunkin Donuts who were eating donuts for dinner. How they stay so damn thin I'll never know. I smell a donut and the wafting sugar smell packs on a pound.
Scotty Kilmer notes that the good VW cars are not sold in America - and when you look around at the reviews you do see a lot of differences in different markets of the same car - even engine options and quality of seats, etc. But I suppose it comes down to economics - the company may have to cut a bunch of corners to be able to sell in one market versus another market.
