According to the list below, Chevy started using CAN bus on the Cobalt in 2005. That's not a complete list of manufacturers and cars. There are others floating around the internet. It seems the whole industry got on the bandwagon in the early to mid-2000s.
The Germans were using it earlier. I have family and friends who have endured CAN bus woes with their BMW or Audi.
But my wife and I have had one motorcycle and four cars with CAN bus so far and no issues (knock on wood).
