Jalen Hurts was ineffective, 7/20 for 72 yards over three full quarters. He had a pick, he should have been picked a couple of other times, and he missed targets, including a wide open receiver in the end zone on 4th and goal. If he was having a sharp game, then he would have something to complain about. But based on his play, he deserved to get benched.
Pedersen had been telling people he was going to give Sudfeld some playing time. He even told Jalen Hurts it was going to happen during practice last week. So does that mean he was planning to tank all week if the opportunity presented itself? How would he know that putting Sudfeld in would throw the game? He'd have to be least somewhat confident about it in order to bother telegraphing the move.
If your goal was to tank, wouldn't you do it via game plan or play calling? Wouldn't that give you a better chance, rather than playing to win and then hoping your backup QB will blow it in the 4th quarter?
All the sports writers want to call it a tank job because then they have a controversy to write about. But I'm not convinced.
If we're going to throw around accusations of tanking based on who plays QB, we should probably start at Jacksonville where Glennon continued to get starts through the second half of the season despite being ineffective in comparison to Minshew.
