I think the addition of neural networks was an improvement and one in a set of tools that comprise AlphaGo. The majority of the work is still done by capitalizing on the strong suits of our current computers, memory and speed.
Will AI get to the point that is currently hyped? A lot of very smart people believe that it will. And some of these people advise caution, both in the short and the long term. The short term risk of poorly constructed attempts is significant and will probably become more commonplace. The longer term risks are different. In the mid 60's the Minsky lab at MIT integrated a CCD array with a robotic arm to catch a ball thrown at it. Someone walked by it and it grabbed them. Pretty telling of the future.
