When I started working from home in the 80's we were living in a round house and couldn't figure a way to build a home office that looked ok. So we found a different place where it was easier to build a standalone office that met my wife's it can not have any common walls with the house requirement. When she came up with the no common wall rule, she cited that me and my work stuff resembled The Blob in the Steve McQueen movie.
I do recommend it. It is nice to have the separation and not have speakers etc., that have to meet wife approval requirements.
