Sorry Pats fans, that was the most satisfying game I've watched in years

The Bills had already won the division, and the Patriots were never in contention for a playoff spot, so both teams could have treated it like a throwaway game. But both teams came out playing with the energy and intensity of a playoff game. The opening drives featured trick plays that both teams had been saving all year. This is why I watch the NFL. Even games that don't matter sometimes matter a lot, to the teams and the fans.

It wasn't really a good game though. That was the biggest losing margin for the Patriots since the Bills beat them 31-0 in the opening game of 2003. But this one was more lopsided than the 2003 defeat and more lopsided than the score indicates because neither team turned the ball over, there were no penalties of significance (and few penalties at all), and no controversial calls.

The Patriots desperately needed Stephon Gilmore last night, because Diggs really tore them a new a-hole. Without Gilmore and opt-outs Dont'a Hightower and Patrick Chung, it's just a middling defense.

I feel bad for Cam Newton. This is probably his last season as a first-string QB and last night could end up being his last game as a starter. He had a good career as a Panther and this is a tough way to end it. He walked into an impossible situation in NE, joining an offense that had been neglected salary-wise and draft-wise, which was further decimated by 6 opt-outs. He still has his legs and some moves, but last night his accuracy was horrible.

Then Jarrett Stidham came in. He didn't throw any better than Cam and he's not mobile. And the rumors say Julian Edelman is retiring. If so, the Patriots offense is well and truly fucked. The only glimmers of hope are that Sony Michel came back strong from his injury, and next year they should have Marcus Cannon and Marquis Lee back.

It's starting to become clear that the Patriots offense of recent Super Bowl years (2016-2018) was not the product of a "system", or of Josh McDaniels' coaching genius. It depended on the efforts of just a few exceptionally talented players: Edelman, Brady, Gronkowski, augmented by a few free agent WRs that they couldn't afford to keep. As these guys have left the building, one by one, the passing game has evaporated.

On the Bills side, when they traded for Stephon Diggs, I really wasn't sure he was worth it considering the cost and Josh Allen's level of play in 2018 and 2019. Boy was I wrong. At this point, they are a good running back away from being the best offense in the NFL.
