I have had two discectomies on two different disks, I went in at 5am was out by noon and walked from the car to the house. Both surgeries were very successful, two weeks at home and six weeks light duty at work. I still have a bad back, arthritis, bone spurs, a lifetime working on my feet, but I don't have the pain and the fear that my legs are going to collapse under me. My doctor kept me off pain meds until surgery because he didn't want me to build up a tolerance so the would work post op and after a few days I switched to Advil. I still have some weakness and numbness in my left leg but I could barely walk before surgery. Good luck with your surgery I hope it works for you, be careful with those pain meds.
