RE: Why do I care what someone else drives?

I think the ride height and sense of safety is a large part of it. Everyone buys these SUVs so you can't see anything anymore from a sedan - so you have to buy an SUV to see better. And if you do have a head-on collision and you're in a Sedan their engine will be in your lap. So you buy an SUV to match up evenly. With all the smartphones and no one looking where they are going there is some sense in this. I think of buying a Miata - God help me in that thing! LOL.

It will depend upon where I choose to retire. My favorite car has been the Honda Civic hatchback with double-wishbone suspension. It was the most fun to drive and had enough space. This is why I want to give the Miata a try. However, If I get married to the woman I have been dating for the last 1.5 years - it becomes a situation where I have to take her and her daughter and my mom around - the Siena with 42mpg in Canada a much more appealing thing. And if I move to Niagara Falls or St. Catherines which is one current plan then AWD would be helpful.

If I am going to buy an ugly utility vehicle - I want it to have actual utility. The SUV (most are actually not able to go offroad) seem stupid - you and savagegeese have been quite useful stressing that these things are basically "me too" vehicles and they go against our own self-interest.

As he noted in the Sienna review - they're not great for kids/baby seats. They cost more. Some actually have less headroom and space than their sedan counterparts - they drive worse than their sedan counterparts, they typically get less gas mileage. And their off-road capability is rather crappy. A Real SUV like the 4Runner can truly go offroad so people who buy those are true outdoors people and fair enough but the Rav4 or CRV meh.

And the Subarus are actually called "Raised Station Wagons" These things are typically a fair chunk less money than competing designs - so they get more of a pass. But even then - what I would buy living in Ontario is completely different than what I would buy living in Texas.
