RE: Worth Considering

I worked with a guy who had is CMA in accounting. He told me that universities are there for average people to get a piece of paper to prove that they're smart. The brilliant people don't need university.

I don't mean business either. Someone has one good idea and turns himself into a billionaire. The Chinese in Wenzhou become uber-rich on gambling. They go to every bank - max out loans with each of them - throw all their money into a stock and if it hits they become 100millionaires overnight. the other 99/100 wind up with nothing and throw themselves off a bridge.

Back in the 1980s, my dad worked for Veteran's Affairs. He had an accounting background but no degree. The Canadian Government had its own internal testing. A job for a supervisor in finance opened up and my dad applied. There was a lengthy written test on accounting. My dad was the only person who passed the test (to the required level). My dad got a job as a supervisor. Two accountants with degrees in accounting also went for the job and failed. Meritocracy.

My dad had the advantage of applied knowledge, more experienced, and one of those folks with an elite memory. He could remember 80%+ of everything he ever read so he would read an accounting book 20 years later he could tell you better than 80% of everything in said book. Many people with degrees learn the material and pass the exam but 6 months later might not remember more than 20% - they're not stupid - they just have to refamiliarize themselves with the content. It also depends on the subject areas.

I would not assume that because someone is rich they are smarter or better. It seems to be the case in America that success is tied to how much money you have. You are rich so God likes you and if you are poor God must hate you. It's quite weird to me but I am not American.

A great play called "Death of a Salesman" is worth a read (better to see it staged) and it illustrates how people, Willy Loman, buy into the American Dream choosing a career path to live the dream but lets his life go by being miserable.
