RE: Let's define terms. What to you is a SJW and name one of them and some issue you

Hello Fellow Canadian. This is the same proposal that was presented in the US by right of center democrat Andrew Yang.

The problem with all politics is those big ideas are reduced to soundbites. Another is defunding the police.

More like "reallocating money for the social good and lessening the burden on cops so they can do their job more effectively and not allowing them to create bigger problems"

And as usual, Star Trek has all the answers. You send in the counselor not Worf to council someone because Worf isn't high on the gentle empathy scale. Cops are typically chosen because they score higher in the areas that are in opposition to sympathy and compassion. At least in the US as other countries have higher standards.

Universal basic income has some theoretical pros and cons. I don't think people would cancel you for being against universal basic income. There are legitimate concerns with the idea.

Singh is a pretty well-spoken guy and if he is arguing for this (I am out of the country so not as in the loop as you are) he should simply outline the reasons he supports the idea.

I can think of some pros - pros for workers that is. So if a person chose the wrong career - what you like at 18 may not be what you like at 30. But everyone is in debt and there is no time or money to get a new education to change your career. A UBI could be used to allow that person to quit the life-sucking soul-crushing job and go back to university without having to sell the family home or car to do it.

Another argument might be that a UBI could reduce poverty and crime. So instead of the guy going into your house and killing your wife to take $50 - if they have a UBI and a place to live then even if he contributes next to nothing he may actually be causing less of a financial hit to society than if we give him nothing and he embarks on a life of crime. Then if we catch him - we have to spend all that tax money on lawyers and prisons and appeals.

Thus, if it could be shown that giving X person a UBI would cost taxpayers LESS money in the long run - (and some estimates suggest that it does) then from a pure right-wing financial conservative perspective, it may actually make sense.

The downside is the lack of motivation to keep working if you are handed everything. I would far rather sit home and listen to my stereo than go to work. So you need some brainiacs to come up with the right balance here is you are going to consider such a plan but I think it could probably be done and be done effectively if we get passed the "we're letting people mooch off our tax dollars" surface-level knee-jerk anger to the mere suggestion of such a policy.
