Smith was well liked and appreciated while he was in KC. It's not that Andy Reid didn't recognize his talent, it was the big leap of faith that drafting Patrick Mahomes would be the future of the Chiefs. Smith understood his situation after that draft and still behaved like a true professional. He took to the role of mentor during his last year in KC and helped Mahomes channel that raw talent developed in an "Air Raid" offense into real NFL QB skills. Mahomes has always given credit to Smith for helping him become the QB he is.
Take a look at the performance of the other QBs taken in the same draft as Mahomes. Its easy to understand what the Chiefs did.
