What is it about we humans that conspiracy theories are so wide-spread?

In a word, heuristics. They are nothing but mental shortcuts, but they can expose us to many biases.

Anchoring bias: the first thing we hear often is what we will believe.

Ambiguity bias: we like to have answers neatly wrapped up; complexity is harder to accept.

Commitment bias: once we're "in," it takes a lot to disabuse us of a "belief." Even if there is much to disprove our original thoughts.

Confirmation bias: we interpret new info so that it backs up our beliefs.

Disposition effect: we hold onto obviously losing investments: why?
