It reminds me of how BofA got extorted out of $250 million by the DOJ for Countrywide's crimes many years after the Treasury begged BofA to take over the company during the Great Recession. This isn't to say that Purdue's sales practices weren't likely illegal in buying off doctors. Still, the states and the docs bear a lot of responsibility. I know that Ohio cracked down quite a while ago as my mother-in-law had been getting opioids for years for back pain and ended up with patches of increasing potency. She was forced to kick the habit via a state program some years ago and now does fine with just some exercise and a little Tylenol now and then.
