more modern psychological models reject the concept of 'addictive personality' because there's chemical, neurological and physiological underlying factors in effect that supersede individual choice, much the same way a patient can still feel pain in a missing limb ... for many the missing limb just 'feels' like it 'fell asleep' but can still transmit pain
and the pain killers relieve this sensation long after the nerves no longer signal trauma
so there's that
