The reality is higher performance tends to lower the reliability and Japanese cars for the most part stay away from high performance thus it is "easier" to last longer without repairs. The reason I liked the Civic over the Toyota was that most of the people buying the Civics were 16-25 and drive them hard. Toyota wa sa granny mobile. So Toyota Tercel would rank 1 and Civic would rank 2 in most reliable but the Honda - if not driven like a maniac - was probably better and would be fun to drive (well relatively fun to drive).
It's the same with Mustang - in the Lemon Aid Guide it would score 3/5 which is not great but when you consider that most people who buy them drive like idiots or track them - 3/5 is miraculous! A Camry back in the day might have been a 5 but it wasn't "fun"
It's one reason I am leaning to buying a Miata - the fact that over the last 10 years it has ranked several times as number 1 most reliable car (against everything) and the fact that they are driven very very hard on the track and always pushed to the max - and the fact that they are supposedly cheap to repaid and get 35mpg etc etc - makes me want one.
And not because it looks nice - but just for reliability, gas mileage, ease of parking, low repair costs when it does fail. And with the RF hard top I can actually drive it year round in Canada. And it supposedly handles great too and is fun to drive - even the auto (less fun but still fun apparently). And it even has a trunk to put your backpack (or two).
It helps that I have lost 45lbs so I might fit in it okay too.
