RE: My next car ...

I have a friend with a similar Accord - late 1990s and is still going well with no major fixes at all - 400,000km. And it's an automatic! It has done some strange things like occasionally when you turn it on you can only drive in reverse - so you have to turn it off and on again and then it will drive forward. But the point it is it does correct itself. What impresses me about it is all the power stuff still works perfectly and the cloth seats have held up and the exterior paint is great. My friend - well she know next to nothing about cars and I asked her how often she waxes it?

A deer in headlights look like - "wax it?" I bet it's never been waxed in over 20 years living in BC with salt, endless rain, snow sleet and road salt etc. No rust!

My 1996 Honda Civic Hatchback is still the best car I ever owned. 89,000km when I sold it (I was forced to due to student loan policies) and it was an automatic and 90% in stop and go traffic. Never even replaced brake pads in that thing. Dealer would say 20% left no need. 6 months later - 20% left no need - it was comical.

Compared to the rolling pile of junk Pontiac Grand Am. 18 months of ownership and in the shop 11 times, Paint peeling on the rood (and I had it waxed), power door locks, windows and alarm all failed. It rattled like mad, passenger seat flies forward in heavy braking, alternator died and I managed to drive home on the battery. But it had a V6 and looked kinda cool. Press hard on the gas and the car's front end would lift up and veer left into on coming traffic.

Eesh.

After vacationing in Japan in late January - I get a real sense of why the Japanese do things better - like everything better. Women, food, women, cars, women, entertainment, women, music, women. :)
