I have Creem magazine and the late Lester Bangs to thank for my introduction to John Coltrane in the seventies.
A while after reading the magazine article, while shopping at Inner Sanctum Records a block away from the University of Texas Austin campus, I noticed a Coltrane record in the used record bin and decided to buy it. It was the Interstellar Space album. This was my first exposure to "free jazz" and upon first hearing, a little jarring. But, l listened to it a few more times and it's spirituality became apparent to me. This was also about the time when the Mahavishnu Orchestra became popular. Of course, Birds of Fire's spirituality was also apparent to me. Further exploration of Coltrane's back catalog only confirmed my feelings of spirituality/religiousness in his music.
