Heating area is roughly up to a 10' radius. The optimal distance for seating is 4-6 feet depending on wind and temperature. Seating under one will be too hot if it's on high. Wind is a big issue, so it will work best if you have an area that is protected from the prevailing wind.
I got one at Costco and have a Coleman too. I prefer the Costco one because there's a peep hole where you can light it with a lighter as the igniters can be picky. Costco only has them seasonally though.
Because of distance being too close or too far, I found that having two heaters at opposite ends of the table works better. It also let's you turn down the heat for people close to the unit and crank up the other for folks further away.
