The most common owls in (northern) New England are the barred owls. When we lived in MA, we had a large, forested tract of conservation land behind us, with many breeding barred owls. In the midsummer, the youngsters would show up in the back yard, practicing their hunting skills (often somewhat comically) at our birdfeeders.
They're quaintly bizarre creatures -- beautiful, capable, and silent hunters.
