Hillary won the popular vote by winning big in California and NYC.
That's exactly why the Electoral College was created because the South was afraid that large populous cities in the North would dominate the election. In a divided nation, I surely don't want a handful of cities in the Northeast and West to dominate the election. In essence, you would have the tyranny of the urban centers dominating the less populous rural states.
Do remember that the US is a Republic, not a pure democracy.
