RE: I remember well.

We evacuated Sunday and after staying in Birmingham for a few days and then Atlanta a friend got us an inexpensive condo in Destin where we stayed with a small group of friends. We thought all was lost too and that it would be six months before we could return when about a week or two later Google released their satellite image of the city and I was able to see that the water had stopped two blocks from the house and the '62 Falcon I left behind was high and dry. We returned to in November after power had been restored to a very surreal place. The city was silent and dark, the streets were lined with dead refrigerators that stunk and the National Guard were patrolling the streets, we got ice from the Teamsters down the street and even had a few meals from the Red Cross food truck. The thing that struck me was every small business that was able to reopen was open. Our neighbors father was staying with her and I got to know him a little and every morning he would get in his pick-up to go work on his house in the lower 9th ward, I guess what I'm saying is that it was the residents of New Orleans and the Latino workers that came that brought the city back no matter who wants to take credit for it now.
