Great article! The decline of Scwinnn in the 70s also coincided with the beginning of a custom frame-building cottage industry first in Europe, then in the US and elsewhere. Unlike factory-assembled, mass market bikes, these were made to order, hand-build and painted, one-at-a-time, by small shop owners who were true craftsman. Many of these marques no longer exist, but some are legendary and the vintage bikes are highly prized today.
If you're interested, here's a great site where you can learn about the history of them.
