Well I suppose autonomy (China or elsewhere) is good as long as the ruling class allows it to be. Most governments have some sort of war measures act which allows the leadership to bypass personal freedoms to let them do essentially whatever they like.

So countries like China can take people off the street and shove them into unmarked cars with a kind of secret police. I think I've seen some of this recently even in countries that are supposedly "free and democratic" - and it happens in Hong Kong. Usually when a person of interest goes on vacation to China they get picked up. The Hong Kong Bookstore owners who have been taken - that was years ago here in HK.

The handover in 1997 included a 50 year clause - that 2047 Hong Kong would be consumed by China. So the process is relatively slow - they are trying to integrate Hongkongers by going for the younger generations. The schools now teach Chinese History and language. They hire pro PRC principals to direct the schools. Some changes to the laws regarding not being allowed to burn the flag (though many countries have these laws too - even democratic ones).

I am looking at 5-7-9 more years here based on 2 year teaching contracts. So we'll see how it goes. And it will depend on what happens to the HKD - if it is no longer pegged to the USD it will have to depend on what it's value is down the line. A lot of people use it to stash their cash so I can't imagine the billionaire class want to have a devalued HKD. I am hoping money talk over the need to control some students. But we shall see.
