My parents lived in their 5th wheel for the better part of 3 years hitting every state but Alaska and Hawaii (and they visited both).
They had a tent trailer first. People don't get that when you are over 65 sleeping in a sleeping bag in a tent gets difficult if you are not in great shape.
Personally, I like the idea of being in the outdoors but sleeping on some sort of decent bed without bugs biting me. I also like air conditioning. So you can cart your home to the lake or by the waterfalls or in the mountains etc.
They had some membership to hundreds of parks in Canada and the US. They just had to phone ahead to make sure there was space when they arrived. It takes planning for that and time to hook up etc - but then hey they're retired what else is there to do? It gives people something to do and to be able to see the countries.
I met a nice US couple traveling across Canada and they were in a park in Nanaimo. They were traveling in a Mercedes/Airstream Sprinter. That was a pretty cool class B.
My problem with it is Mercedes will be expensive to fix and the German reliability is pretty rubbish. Still it looked quite good. But they still look a bit big to take to the shopping malls. The Hyundai above might fit.
One other problem - I could buy a 1650 square foot townhouse in Port Alice BC for $60,000 US - the Mercedes is $150k. The house goes up in value - the Mercedes will probably be worth $50k in 7 years.
