The bikes were junk and they looked ridiculous.
But the Evolution engine was pretty good and there are some HDs I wouldn't mind riding myself. Mostly from the Sportster line.
The V-Rod had an engine designed by Porsche, but it was an answer to a question nobody asked. It was too expensive for the UJM crowd and no sport bike enthusiast would have touched it. As you said, the Harley faithful won't accept any bike that doesn't look like it was built in the 1930s.
