It is a scary result though it's also a small study. The methodology is also somewhat self selected and uses severe cases:
"This is a prospective observational cohort study of 100 patients diagnosed with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 = SARS-COV-2
It's the name of virus we're been discussing and hearing about daily for 6 months. One would hope that a person whose wife and son were recently infected with the virus would know its name, but I guess not. Wow...
The word severe here has nothing to do with the severity of the cases. If you read the study, you'll see that their findings are independent of the severity of the cases and pre-existing conditions.
Exclusion criteria were unwillingness to participate or provide informed consent or absolute contraindications for a contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance study."
So they excluded people who refused to participate. How dare them...
Absolute contraindications for a contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance study means people who aren't eligible for an MRI based on safety criteria. The #1 reason for that is implants: pacemakers, defibrillators, insulin pumps, anything containing ferromagnetic metals (stainless steel). "Contrast enhanced" means the patients will be given gadolinium (a rare earth metal) intravenously to enhance the image. That's going to rule out pregnant or breast feeding women, certain cancer patients, some others.
So their use of contrast-enhanced MRI is going to exclude unhealthy patients, not healthy ones.
