The mask rule is no different from the others

I grew up in Western New York state, and I remember when New York first mandated the wearing of seat belts in the early 80s. It was controversial and many people refused to use them. It took a decade or more before it finally became nearly ubiquitous.

I've flown a lot, at least a million airline miles, and I've seen many, many people not wearing their seatbelt. Before takeoff, I've seen people lay the two parts of the seatbelt on top of one another and hold them with a hand to make it look like it's buckled when the flight attendant walks by, but it's really not. I've also seen people buckle their seatbelt for the pre-flight check, and as soon as the flight attendants are seated for takeoff, it's off again. It's not rare.

After 9/11, when US airline security checkpoints got stricter with new rules, there were a lot of people who had a problem following them. First it was the people who got irate about being asked to take off their shoes and belts. Later it was the body scanners. And there's always people who try to bring food items through, or get away without taking their computer or tablet out of their bag. And then there's the people trying to take an extra carry-on bag, or boarding out of order, or use their computer during takeoff and landing, or going to the toilet in turbulence when the seatbelt light is on. Every time I fly there are stubborn stupid people who can't get with the program.

Another thing people have a surprisingly hard time with is child seats in cars. I have young kids, so I pay attention to this. Only half of the parents we socialize with, at most, will properly install their car seats and properly fasten the harness. My in-laws won't. My brother and sister in-law have a toddler and two babies. They put them three across in an SUV that's not wide enough for it, so the seats can't be properly fastened. I've seen them install the infant seats with 6-12" of slack in the belt, and called them on it, but they won't put the toddler in the third row even though they bought a three-row SUV. And it's not like they're uneducated rednecks. One is an architect and the other is a senior genomics technician and they both take COVID-19 seriously.

My mother and father in law can't properly fasten a 5-point harness. I've shown them how and they pretend to care, but then I'll catch them with the chest clip around the belly button and the harness so loose it's hanging off the sides of the shoulders. I've seen blog posts and even a whole web site dedicated to justifying improper car seat usage. It boggles my mind.

My company requires us to wear masks on the premises and sanitize any common workspaces and/or equipment. People mostly followed the rules for two to three months, but now they're slacking. Very few people are wiping down common equipment after they use it (or before), and half are dropping dong.

We as a species are stupid. We dedicate so much of our collective effort trying to keep ourselves alive and extend our lives, and at the same time we refuse to do the simple, minimally inconvenient things that most advance that goal.
