RE: Giving money to people

I'll give you an example.

My town of Nanaimo was seeing an influx of homeless people from across the province. They found a plot of land and erected tents. It grew so large that it was called tent city. The location was near the downtown core where tourists would come in. Many of the people living in tent city were doing hard drugs and thefts were rising such that the downtown core had to hire security guards.

A businessman decides to try and help as Inmate 51 noted (he's willing to help people willing to work). So this businessman went in and asked everyone if they would be willing to work clearing out a construction site - basically clean up - do some weeding - get rid of the litter.

$20 an hour - min wage was $11.85 or so at the time. hundreds of people in tent city - next to zero takers.

The government office is a 7 minute walk from Tent city. These people can walk in and use the free computers which has access to Jobs Canada website the lists all the jobs in the city. There are people who donate clothing for interviews and places they can shower and shave so they can look good at interviews.

Free job training exists at the local university where they will help you write a resume. There are drug treatment centers (free) to get you off your addictions.

I mean at some point you have to stand up and work to improve your life. And of course many people do stand up.

I met a woman who worked at the grocery store near tent city - she lived in tend city 6 months prior and now she was clean and working at the grocery store as a checkout clerk - so they trusted her with the money!

The analogy is that 50 people are thrown overboard in the ocean. The only thing a society can do is throw the life preserver out to the people in the water. They have to reach out and grab it. But some people refuse to grab the life preserver and instead want you to give them a free 100 foot Yacht.
