It should be noted that other European nations also offer free University Educations to non citizens. And the education of travel is always useful so one can actually see how the people are living in those nations with their "Capitalism Plus" societies like Norway and Denmark etc.
The problem with student debt is that you lack power over your situation. You wind up taking a job sooner than you otherwise would because you have to make the $800 a month student loan payment. When I left University I was around $50,000 in debt (prime +2% interest) and sure if you didn't have a job they would not make you pay but the interest mounts up. Declaring bankruptcy does not absolve the student loan payment.
I took a teaching job in South Korea and hated the school with a passion but because I was in debt I had to suck it up and stay. A workforce in debt gives power to the slime ball bosses. So you stay at the horrible job because you're in debt or you rely on the medical insurance.
If I took that same job today, because I am debt free, and worth a fair chunk of cash - I would have laughed in the school owner's face and walked out. Economic might gives you power of choice and is a major stress reducer.
