I've flown the upper deck on the 747 a couple of times between Chicago and Tokyo. That was nice. But otherwise the 747 is kind of meh. Once I'd flown the A380 I started trying to avoid 747 flights.
Have you tried Qantas' updated A380 config?
When I lived out your way, I was logging ~100k miles/year on Qantas A380s and I always liked their config. The old Skybeds in business had plenty of room for sleeping. There seemed to be more room in economy than on the 747, and the small economy section at the back of the upper deck was nice.
