Some of that comes from media portrayal

I won't deny that the US is in a really crazy state of affairs right now.

However, when I've lived and traveled overseas, I've noticed differences in how the media portrays the US. In some places it's more favorable than in other places, as might be expected. But in Europe, including the UK, it's not so much favorable or unfavorable but sensationalist and exaggerated.

Every country has its share of stupid people doing stupid things, crime, scandals, etc. but you're not exposed to it unless you live there or specifically seek it out. But the whole Western world seems to have an insatiable appetite for consuming American news, and the more head scratching and messed up it is, the more views it gets.
