RE: I've heard that before, but never experienced it

I was on a criminology tour studying the criminal justice system in the UK and France. As this was a Canadian class - several of the students could speak French. The tour was 22 days and included the course, the return flight breakfasts, lunch a couple of dinners, a show in London and the professors (Cambridge University). All for $3,000 Canadian so that was a deal and half. All hotels were 3 star or better.

One lunche was in Paris - someone at our table asked for ketchup for the fries. And the waiter snickered to another waiter in French. Translated was "stupid American wanting ketchup" - this was mid 1990s (I suppose he should have ordered mayonnaise with his fries). The hotel in Versailles had a similar desk clerk. That's all part of the charm. Most people were quite nice though - like anyplace it all depends on who you meet. The desk clerk came around to me by the end of my stay.

As for the UK - that was one guy - I am not saying everyone there will treat Americans poorly but to be on one's guard because it can and does happen and you could be there for a month and never run into a problem. I don't wear flags on my apparel intentionally and the guy I met was snarky and I had said nothing to him. Once I told him I was from Canada - he changed on a dime.
