RE: Kids are germ bags...

They need to have a zero tolerance policy about sick kids and screen them daily before they come in the door. It's got to be like the company I work for. Our policy since March has been that if you're not feeling well in any way, shape or form, don't come in and call the facility nurse. It doesn't matter if it's hay fever, a tummy ache, or you're just feeling off. Don't leave it up to people to guess whether they might have COVID-19.

If parents are wearing masks and social distancing at work, or working from home, and kids are doing the same in schools (to the extent practical), and everyone is avoiding public gatherings and other risky behaviors, then there are much fewer opportunities for the common communicable diseases to spread. So there should be a lot less sick kids this year.

On the other hand, in undisciplined communities where a lot of people keep blowing off COVID-19 guidelines and socializing and gathering, we're likely to see clusters of cases traced to schools and they'll end up closed again half-way through the semester.

I'm most worried about day cares and pre-schools. At least in elementary, you have some hope of keeping the kids apart and masks on.
