Transmission via contaminated surfaces is a suspected mechanism for virus spread, but there's no conclusive evidence that it spreads that way. There is evidence that the virus remains alive on contaminated surfaces, but there's no way to know for sure whether it's spreading to other people that way.
Likewise, airborne transmission is suspected, but there's no conclusive evidence that the virus spreads by airborne transmission either. There's evidence that it can linger in the air, but there's no way to know for sure whether it's spreading to other people that way.
In any conceivable spreading event, there's always going to be multiple potential transmission mechanisms. The only way to really know for sure which transmission mechanism are most likely or least like is to conduct controlled human challenge trials, which is unethical.
