It depends so much on where you are

If I lived where Gak! does, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to send my kids to school.

On the other hand, if I lived in metro Phoenix, Miami, LA, Houston, etc. there's no way in hell I'd put my kids back in school until they're well over this wave and proved they maintain a low caseload and low risk posture for a couple months.

I have two young kids, 4 and 6, and I'm on the fence about sending them to school. We live in Southern NH, in a town with 29 active cases out of a population of 33k. We peaked at the end of April with 178 active cases, and the number slowly but steadily declined through the end of June. We've been flat for the last two weeks, and if it stays at this level I'm OK with schools re-opening. However, I've seen some irresponsible behavior lately and I'm concerned about the trend going up again.

This past school year, we had our kids in an early childhood education program at a private Montessori school, full time. We were planning to send my daughter to the public school for 1st grade, which is right at the end of our street and won't cost us tuition. But due to the pandemic, we opted to enroll her in the elementary program at the Montessori school. It's a very small program, it's fairly tightly run, and there's plenty of space. So we figured that was our best chance to get her into a safe environment. She's ahead of the curve academically and we're really motivated to keep her in school and avoid regressing. My son is still in pre-school, which is more crowded and chaotic, so we're less comfortable sending him back if the COVID-19 situation here worsens.
