You can use a Presta tube on a Schraeder rim with an adapter

The last bike I had with a Schraeder valve was a BMX'er in the early 80s. Even my kids' bikes have Presta valves.

Anyway, you need something like this:

If you don't have an adapter, you have to be very careful to keep the valve stem centered in the hole when mounting the tire and inflating, otherwise the rim is likely to cut the tube. I would only do this in an emergency.
