"Imperfect Union" by NPR's Steve Inskeep covers the life of John C Fremont, the first presidential candidate of the Republican Party.He was kind of a rascal/scoundrel who often cut corners. He also had a knack for meeting some of the more colorful and interesting characters of US History during the 1820-1856 period and later.
I agree with your summation about that era getting short shrift in US History literature. There aren't very many other books that cover Fremont so take the time to read the book and fill in some of the blanks in your studies of that time.
