Most auto part stores will scan your car for free, and give you a report with suggested parts to buy from them.
Years ago I bought a disassembled Prius. It came with four OBD scanners. The cheap ones just read generic power train codes, the complete packages for a car brand, Toyota in this case are $200 - $400.
The OBD scanners they have at auto parts stores, are from my experience, excellent.
I ended up with a fair amount of experience with that Prius and posted about it on Prius sites. I still get questions, if you end up with a question, feel free to contact me, include the scanned codes.
