The previous two coronaviruses never reached that point

I'm assuming you're talking about SARS and MERS.

The spread of SARS was stopped very early in its spread, via traditional containment methods. There were about 8k cases total out of ~6.5B people in the world and it hasn't returned. That's because China and others acted swiftly and aggressively.

The initial outbreak of MERS was contained quickly, but it was never eradicated. It's still around on the Arabian peninsula, but it only infects a couple hundred people per year, so it is well contained and not a big public health risk.

There seems to be some differences between SARS, MERS, and SARS-CoV-2 that make the latter much more difficult to control. It's past the point were it can be eradicated like SARS, but it's not past the point where it can be reduced to a manageable, low risk level like MERS. Several countries have already proven that it's possible.

Unfortunately, your favored doctor is on the fatalistic herd immunity bandwagon and seems to be ignorant or dismissive of what other countries are accomplishing.
