Part of the problem is that for the last 20 years, we've been subjected to so much disinformation, propaganda, and conspiracy that nobody trusts sources of information other than their own. Even matter of fact reporting is assumed to have an agenda.
Part of it is human nature. Why should I care about YOUR problem? I'm not suffering yet, so I must be doing something right. I see what's happening there, but it won't happen here because we're different, special, lucky, whatever.
And another part of it is trust in government or lack thereof. Look who's at the top of the leaderboard: USA, Brazil, Russia (who likely has a bigger problem than is public). No trust in government to be found there. Then look at the countries that have brought the disease to a virtual halt.
