RE: well...

Back in the early mid 1990s I drove from BC to Los Angeles and as soon as we hit California it's like the nice roadway we were on turned to utter crap. bump bump bang pot hole - roads just went to hell.

Not exactly knowing where we were and running out of gas I took an exit to a gas station and holy cow was that frightening. park the car - the gas pump doesn't work - had to pay the man behind bullet proof glass and bars first and there was graffiti everywhere and boom cars in the distance. Similar was the Motel 6 which looked like a crack-house from Breaking Bad. I get that it's a budget hotel - umm but WOW.

I remember covering the California audio show in 2017 and I had to take the BART from San Francisco Airport to Oakland airport and the shuttle to the hotel - so around midnight I get to the Oakland Coliseum Station wearing a bright Blue jacket that says Vancouver on it (hellooooo tourist). And let's say you probably do not want to do this at this time. I am sure it was probably safe but nevertheless I walked expeditiously to the train to to the airport. It's just an uneasy feeling I never got in Tokyo or Singapore or Hong Kong for example so...

Probably because the infrastructure seems more in tatters and things are not well lit and the BART is - no offense to San Francsico - a bit of a dilapidated train. It has that feeling you are in Gotham City or in the TV show The Equalizer and a gang is going to board at any minute and knife you.

I am sure if you were born there and live there all your life it's probably fine but because I have traveled and can male the comparisons riding that BART an hour plus - gave me an uneasy feeling shall we say.

I really think that my fellow Canadians and a pretty good idea for Americans too - to turn the TV off and close the news papers - and when they can eventually travel take a 2 month holiday and see Finland/Denmark/France/Portugal and Singapore/Hong Kong and Tokyo. Feet on the ground - mouths moving to the people.

Look around at the ground - the streets, the homeless, walk into a hospital and ask about them, take public transit (bus ferry, train)- take a taxi. Walk into the shops - find out how much people make after all expenses and taxes - what is their net saving?

Tokyo is an amazing place - and Singapore if you don't mind humidity is great in its own little way. A little too westernized perhaps so it doesn't feel like you are traveling beyond Vancouver. I like it but I can see if people are looking for an experience wildly different than the west Singapore isn't that. Japan I have been to twice and both times I leave thinking of ways I can move there.
