The purpose of professional sports is to make money

They're fighting over shares of a shrunken pie. The negotiations are difficult because the size of the pie is an unknown. The players don't have visibility into the teams' balance sheets and financial positions, so they are negotiating in the dark and reluctant to offer concessions. The owners understand their own financial situation better, but there's still a lot of uncertainty about the impact of COVID-19.

If I were a veteran player, I'd probably want the 2020 season to be cancelled. Unless of course my contract was ending this season and I didn't have a great year in 2019. I imagine most rookies want to play too.
