RE: Is that a CA thing?

At 50 yards I could keep a 6" group without a rest, or a 4" group with a rest. I couldn't do that much better with my shotgun, a Remington 870 pump with slug barrel. I was a practiced shot, but no marksman. The appeal of a pistol was that it was easier to carry around while hunting on foot and you don't have to worry about snow, rain or whatever else falling off the tree branches and into the open end of the barrel while it's slung over your shoulder.

There wasn't a lot of open spaces where I used to hunt, so the longest shot I ever took was 60-70 yards. I got it, but hit it high and broke the spine, so it was still alive but with hind quarters immobilized. I had to put it down at point blank range, with the poor deer staring at me scared shitless. That was hard and it took me a while to get that image out of my head.

The last one I ever shot was 30-40 yards away from a tree stand. It was an old buck and I put the bullet straight through the heart. Two leaps and it fell flat.

That was many years ago and I don't have much desire to hunt anymore. I miss the butchering and eating venison, but I've got plenty of other things I prefer to cook now. I rarely shoot anymore, just occasional target practice with friends, and never carried a loaded gun.
