RE: RIP Christo... a visionary artist...

Not only a visionary but his art touched the lives of so many people including yours truly. I remember hearing about the Running Fence when I lived in Sonoma County and thinking it a ridiculous idea until I saw a book and documentary on the Hanging Curtain in Riffle Canyon, CO. and then it all made sense. As soon as I could I applied for a job working on the fence. First they did the heavy construction setting the polls and running the cables then they called us in to hang the fabric. The first day we had about 500 people, mostly U.C. Sonoma students, we worked from sun up to sun down. It was hard work trying to hang 18'x24' panels of air bag fabric in the wind the next day we had about half the workers.
It wasn't easy for Christo and Jean Claude to convince all the powers that be to let the installation go forward, Sonoma Co. sheep farmers can be pretty ornery but in the end there was only one rancher that wouldn't let it cross his land. The fence actually crossed part of Marin county also and that is where it ran into the Pacific ocean. IIRC it was on the second day when we had to stop working on the section we were assigned to and bus over to the Marin side to finish that part of the fence because Christo decided to defy the Army Core of Engineers and run it into the ocean and he wanted to finish the Marin side in case they made him pull it out.
That three days working from dawn to dusk was one of the defining experiences of my life, something I'll never forget. Maybe I can get to Paris to see the wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in October. Both Christo and Jean Claude will be missed but it's good to know his work will continue posthumously.

I think I posted this before but here it is again.
